Tom Elder has experienced Economic Development in Hampton Roads from every angle.
Before holding the title of Executive Vice President for the Alliance, Elder spent ten years serving the City of Chesapeake as the Assistant Director of Economic Development. More recently, in the summer of 2015, Elder was hired as Director of Economic Development for Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
Along the way, Elder has relied on the Alliance to promote the region's economy to a national and international audience.
"The Alliance is our region's marketing arm across the globe," said Elder. "Companies don't need to call all the communities in Hampton Roads. They work with the Alliance, and it makes the process more productive."
Isle of Wight County is one of 11 localities represented by the Alliance. It is one of our region's rural communities, totaling 319 square-miles and 36,000 residents. The county is home to Smithfield Foods, Inc., the largest pork processor in the world.
In recent years, with the help of the Alliance, Keurig Green Mountain opened a new 329,000 sq. ft. facility in Isle of Wight County.
"The Alliance creates capital investment for the entire region... It helps keep taxes low and leads to job opportunities. Our entire region benefits from its efforts."
Elder believes economic development officials from across the region want the Alliance to succeed. If the Alliance wins, so does our local economy. That's why he thinks investing in the Alliance is the smart decision.
"Investing in the Alliance is the right thing to do," he said. "You’re helping the community grow and building a prosperous future."
