$58 million investment and 135 new jobs coming to Suffolk, Virginia

The Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance (the Alliance) is pleased to announce that Peet’s Coffee®, the original craft coffee brand, has selected the City of Suffolk to establish an East Coast manufacturing operation.

In a press conference today, Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Peet’s Coffee will invest $58 million to build a 175,000 SF roastery in Suffolk, Virginia.  Virginia competed against five other mid-Atlantic states for this project, which will create 135 new jobs for the region.

Peet’s Coffee, originally founded by Alfred Peet in 1966 in Berkeley, California, is committed to sourcing the world’s best beans, roasting them by hand, and brewing them to perfection. Peet’s Coffee upholds its commitment to delivering the world’s freshest beans through a variety of measures, including a unique Direct Store Delivery network serving over 14,000 grocery stores daily. Peet's Coffee is dedicated to growing its business through its retail, grocery, office coffee and e-commerce channels while maintaining the superior quality of its coffee.

"It is with great pride that we welcome Peet’s Coffee® to Suffolk, Hampton Roads' growing "caffeine capital," notes Alliance chairman Mr. John Padgett.”We are honored they selected our region as a place to expand their coffee and tea empire of 50-years, and we look forward to witnessing their continued success for many more years to come."

The Alliance, along with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Port of Virginia and the City of Suffolk assisted the company during the decision-making process and secured their spot in Virginia. Governor McAuliffe approved a $1 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Suffolk with the project. The company is also eligible to receive sales and use tax exemptions and will receive benefits from the Port of Virginia’s Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program. The Virginia Jobs Investment Program will be providing funding and services to support employee training activities.

"The arrival of Peet’s Coffee® is one more example of the exceptional collaboration and service delivered by our region's economic development professionals," said Rick Weddle, President & CEO of the Alliance.  "We all work together to promote Hampton Roads and its community of strong, unique, distinctive brands as the preferred location for companies around the world.  These firms contribute significantly to the region’s economy and our strong partnership and success demonstrates the value the Alliance brings to its membership and partners."

The Alliance extends our congratulations to Suffolk Mayor, Linda T. Johnson, Economic Development Director, Kevin Hughes and the entire team at Suffolk Economic Development, as well as thanks to all of our private and public sector investors for their continued support of the Alliance and its mission.
