Meet the Team: Marketing & Communications

Teamwork is a key component to success at the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance and while all of the staff's responsibilities intertwine on a daily basis, each department has a unique role to help propel the Alliance's mission to serve as the area’s lead regional economic development and marketing organization.

The Marketing & Communications department is comprised of Jillian Goodwin, Director and Addie Mason, Associate Director, and is overseen by Executive Vice President Chris Lemmon. This Marketing & Communications team works daily to provide creative and engaging communications solutions on a variety of platforms to support the needs of Alliance leadership, Business Development and Business Intelligence departments. They are responsible for managing all public communications and outreach, to include: website, social media, newsletters, digital marketing, marketing collateral, press releases, promotional materials and more. Both Goodwin and Mason are experienced in graphic design and photography and able to conceptualize and develop the majority of the Alliance's creative assets in-house as a result. When asked about the Marketing & Communications role at the Alliance, Goodwin shared, "Our department works collaboratively with Alliance staff to craft messaging and offer visual solutions that allow us to connect with and serve all Alliance stakeholders and target audiences. We work closely with our leadership to build the Alliance's reputation within the region and with our business teams to share the story of our region with external markets, so they see why Hampton Roads is a great place to locate a business." 

Chris - BlogChris Lemmon, who joined the Alliance in January 2019, acts as Executive Vice President and as the organization’s first-ever Chief Marketing Officer. He manages the Marketing & Communications as well as the Business Intelligence and Business Development departments to maximize the Alliance’s marketing efforts that promote Hampton Roads as a premier location for business investment and expansion. JillianJillian Goodwin started with Alliance as a summer intern in 2015 before joining the team as full-time staff in January 2016. She currently serves as director of Marketing & Communications and is tasked with managing all aspects of the organization’s communication in support of the Alliance's business plan. Utilizing a variety of software programs and digital platforms, her department writes and develops relevant and unique content to be shared with key stakeholders and target audiences. Goodwin and her team are responsible for engaging with the Hampton Roads business community and maintaining the Alliance's reputation throughout the community through platforms such as print and digital advertisements, social media and web. In addition to engaging with the local community, a key function of Marketing & Communications is to produce and maintain all of the marketing collateral used by the Business Development team on marketing missions, at trades shows and with site consultants and prospects considering opening operations in Hampton Roads. Goodwin, who holds an A.S. in Graphic Design from Tidewater Community College and B.S. in Communications from Old Dominion University, is the lead graphic designer for the Alliance and as director, she maintains organizational brand standards by promoting a high level of visual and written consistency throughout all Alliance print and digital publications.  

AddieAddie Mason joined the Alliance in June 2017 and works closely with Goodwin as a creative thinker and problem-solver to fulfill the department's responsibilities. With a B.F.A. in Photography from University of West Florida, Mason acts as the Alliance's primary photographer and videographer to capture, edit and maintain all visual assets that help tell the story of our region. Her role also includes managing the Alliance's three social media platforms, writing and maintaining the Alliance's inRoads blog, and managing the Alliance's website, The Alliance's website, in particular, is a primary source for data for the entire region and it is a key responsibility of the  department to ensure the site is up to date and relevant at all times. “It’s important that our marketing efforts show all that Hampton Roads has to offer and that we accurately share the beauty of our region,” says Mason. “Being able to visually tell the Hampton Roads story is a tremendous honor.”   

With a hand on so many projects and initiatives throughout the organization, there is rarely a slow day for the Marketing & Communications department, but there are many successful ones. According to Goodwin, "By always keeping the Alliance's vision of creating a more prosperous, growing and diverse regional economy top of mind, we embrace creativity to find innovative and impactful ways to both support our colleagues and share why we believe Hampton Roads is a great place to do business."
