Alliance at Work: July/August 2019
In addition to the five prospect visits the Alliance hosted for companies looking to relocate to Hampton Roads, the Alliance also conducted two marketing missions to Baltimore this summer. Steve Harrison, Vice President of Business Intelligence, travelled to Baltimore alongside Ray White from Virginia Beach to meet with corporate decision makers in the Information Technology sector. Amy Parkhurst, Senior Vice President of Business Development, conducted a marketing mission in Baltimore alongside members from Franklin Southampton Economic Development, Inc. Three meetings with executives from companies within the Alliance’s target sectors were held as a result of these two missions.
In July, the Alliance conducted a media tour of the region by hosting three journalists covering the food and beverage processing sector to familiarize them with Hampton Roads. The tour included a regional overview and facility tours at the Port of Virginia, Smithfield Foods, Chesapeake Bay Packing, Massimo Zanetti, Neighborhood Harvest and Tarnished Truth Distillery. Also in July, the Alliance hosted a two-day Foreign Direct Investment Training workshop. The workshop was run by the Alliance's partners at PM&P, an international marketing consultancy that specializes in assisting European firms expand their operations to North America. The workshop included work sessions on various FDI topics including FDI Promotion Challenge, Major Drivers for European Investors, Europe as a Market: Trends in Trade, Designing Business Propositions and Messaging and Differentiate Your Location from Competing Locations: Differentiating the Offering and Retention & Aftercare. The workshop also included Cultural Training on how to deal with European investors and a workforce development panel discussion featuring employers from the Hampton Roads region. The workshop was complimentary to all Alliance's private and public investors, with more than 35 attendees over the course of two days.
Members from the Alliance recently travelled to Richmond to participate in the Virginia Economic Developers Association’s Fall Conference. The three-day conference covered such topics as marketing tools, community storytelling, media best practices, content strategy, and more. Steve Harrison was chosen to be a panel presenter on IEDC award winning projects at the conference. The region was also represented by Jared Chalk of Norfolk who was also a presenter for this segment.
During the conference, Florence Kingston, Director of Economic Development for the City of Newport News received a VEDA Cardinal Award. The Cardinal Award is the most prestigious award bestowed by VEDA to deserving members. The award recognizes leadership in the field of economic development, outstanding professional accomplishments, and exceptional service to the organization, and Kingston is most deserving of this prestigious recognition.
